Additional/Special Educational Needs

Additional/Special Educational Needs

Introduction

At Clarin College, we are committed to developing each student to their full potential. The Special Educational Needs (SEN) Department provides ongoing support to students with additional/special educational needs. There is a huge level of commitment by the SEN Team and the Teachers to ensure that students' Learning and Development Needs are met.

Enrolment process

When enrolling a child in the school, parents need to inform Principal Daniel Hyland and/or the Special Needs Co-ordinator Noreen Qualter of the child's difficulties. All the child's reports should be given to the school to plan for their support.

Levels of Support

SEN students are supported in small groups in specific aspects of the curriculum or have Team-Teaching support in some of their subject classes so that common targets in their personalised pupil plans (PPP) can be addressed. We have a number of qualified teachers which include the SENCO and the Principal. And our new school campus boasts a state of the art Special Needs Unit (SNU) wing with two Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) classes, a multi-sensory room, para-educational room, living skills room and a practical activity room.

Role of SENCO

The SEN co-ordinator liaises with students, parents, staff, and outside agencies to coordinate provision for students A/SEN. She liaises with parents and the State Examinations Commission to ensure that the needs of students who qualify for Reasonable Accommodations for the State Certificate Examinations (RACE) are met.

DARE is the Disability Access Route to Education and offers students with special educational needs access to third level on reduced points. Eligible students are supported through the school's Guidance and SEN departments.
